This command agriculture initiative programme approach is part of the economic recovery effort as

well as self-sufficiency in the provision of food for the next three (3) to four (4) years with 400 hectares dedicated

to grain production for a yield of at least two million tones of maize per season. Under the programme, large

participating farmers wil have access to at least 200 ha of arable land each which will be under irrigation.

A distinct advantage about the project is that it is self-financing, with each participating farmer being required to

commit five tonnes per hectare towards repayment of advanced loans in the form of irrigation equipment, inputs

and chemicals, mechanized equipment, electricity and water charges.  The farmer retains all surplus produce

for personal use.

As the programme matures, similar iitiative will be rolled out to other grains such as soya beans, wheat, etc.
