Functions of the Department
Farmer Training.
Provision of technical, extension and advisory services.
Undertake strategic planning.
Develop and maintain database on crops, soils and livestock technologies for purposes of extension, training and services delivery.
Dissemination of agricultural and market related information.
Promote and commercialise marginalised crops and livestock.
Monitor crop and livestock production trends and provide ministry and other stakeholders with information.
Dissemination and promotion of adoption of new crop and livestock production technologies through on farm trials and demonstration, holding field days, exchange visits, farmer field schools and technology fairs.
Carry out crop and livestock assessments for early warning for food security, pests and diseases including use of Geographic information Systems (GIS).
Collate agricultural production information.
Provide link or interface between researches and farmers.
Mobilization of farmers for targeted production.
Develop environmentally sustainable production systems.
Dissemination and promotion of adoption of new crop and livestock production technologies
Provide official live animal grading services at public auctions;
Provide official carcass grading services in registered abattoirs;
Design and administer the livestock public sales calendar;
