Background

The Division of Livestock and Veterinary Services was established in 2003. It was formed by the  merging of the Departments of Veterinary Services  and Livestock Production and Development. The Principal Director is the head of the Division and each Department is head by a Director.

Mission statement

Our mission is to provide a sustainable livestock and veterinary service in response to client's and cooperating partner needs. This is achievable through regulatory and technical activities for the prevention, control and eradication of specified animal diseases, pests and livestock production and development thus promoting livestock production, welfare and veterinary public health and ensuring a viable and internationally competitive Zimbabwean livestock industry.


Clients Charter

The Division of Livestock and Veterinary Services is committed to serve all its clients to the best of its ability and in order to do this the Division undertakes to:

  • Attend to all clients visiting the Division's premises within minutes
  • React to reports to outbreaks of diseases of animals within 24 hours and initiate immediate control measures
  • Respond to telephonic requests from clients politely and immediately
  • Acknowledge and respond to correspondence within two weeks of receiving it
  • Conduct surveillance for early detection of specified diseases and pests as follows:
  • Advise the Division's clients on livestock production, animal health, veterinary public health and welfare immediately on receiving request
  • Ensure that sufficient dip chemical is available at all times at smallholders dip-tanks for effective control of ticks and tick-borne diseases
  • Provide advisory services on management principles, production activities and disease outbreaks within one * of receiving a request
  • Provide advice, training programmes and extension materials to farmers towards promoting animal health and production
  • Initiate laboratory diagnosis for animal diseases, pests and for milk and provide feedback within one day of completion of tests
  • Provide a quality assured milk recording and testing programme for the dairy industry
  • Provide regulatory classification and grading of carcasses of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs at all abattoirs in Zimbabwe as a daily activity
  • Ensure on a daily basis that only safe and wholesome animal products are produced at all export slaughter facilities
  • Apply on an annual basis the most cost-effective environmentally sound integrated strategies for the eradication of tsetse transmitted trypanosomosis
  • Uphold the highest ethical standards at all times.
