AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING AND MECHANIZATION
FUNCTIONS
- Plan for establishment of sustainable mechanisation programmes for the farming sector;
- Monitor and evaluate agricultural mechanisation programmes;
- Design, evaluate and supervise construction of farm infrastructure (animal handling facilities);
- Capacitate farmers, extension staff and operators on mechanisation technologies;
- Review and develop standards for agricultural machinery and equipment;
- Provide technical information on agricultural mechanisation;
- Promote conservation agriculture and sustainable energy technologies in agriculture;
- Research, develop and test agricultural machinery and equipment technologies;
- Facilitate, repair and maintain agricultural machinery and equipment; and
- Provide tillage services, repair, maintenance, mechanised weeding and pest control.
SOIL CONSERVATION AND POST HARVEST
FUNCTIONS
- Provide harvesting, processing (produce handling) and crop storage facilities;
- Produce designs, develop and supervise construction of farm structures;
- Capacitate farmers, extension staff and operators, on post-harvest and climate smart mechanisation technologies;
- Protect arable and non-arable land through pegging of soil and water conservation works;
- Supervise construction of coil and water conservation works and small dams / weirs (below eight (8) metres)
- Monitor and evaluate implemented mechanical soil and water conservation techniques;
- Conduct research on appropriate post-harvest and soil and water conservation technologies; and
- Promote appropriate tillage systems that conserve fuel, soil, and moisture (climate conservation agriculture).
